The place was the abode of many Rishis(maamunis)and on account of itthe place got the name Maamunikkunnu later shortened as Maamaanikkunnu

There are many caves ,believed to have been used by seers ,in and around the place The temple belongs to Kallyaattu thaazhaththu tharavaatu .

The structures of the temple are on the hill 18 steps are provided from the ground level to reach the Gopuram of the temple top. With In the chuttambalam there are all the usual structure except the Valiya balikkall

Tradition says that originally the idol Mahishaasura marddini alone existed .Considering the fierse nature of the diety ,the idol of Lord Siva was installed later the positions of goddess facing north,subshrine siva facing east and and the presence of kshethrapaalaat northeast images of saptha-maathrukals at northwest and the pit for cock sacrifice at northwest indicates that it is a temple of Sreebhadrakaali of Rurujiththa vidhaanam The priests are from pitaaraars.The outer wall

has16 pillars10 for sreekovil and 6 for mukhamandapam there are 3 ghanadwaaraas ,the south has 3 holes. At the Sreemukham of the Sreekovil there are some excellent carvings of figurines

There is a silaa peedham with the sanklpam of Mahishaasuramarddini in the SREEKOVIL. Saptha-maathrukkals are installed in sitting pose touching the southern wall of the sreekovil behind the goddess.Siva is in the linga form .Lord saastha is with his consort prabha and son Sathyaka. kshethrapaalan is in standing pose
